A lot of us take water for granted. We can’t imagine a life where we would have to walk hours round trip just to get water. We turn on a faucet and there is clean water. It is hard to focus on anything when you’re hungry. Unfortunately, there are a lot of kids who go to school hungry in the morning. That usually leaves them hungry for two to three hours until lunch time. That’s two to three hours when they can’t learn properly because they aren’t able to focus. We very rarely think about how many people in the world are lacking this most basic of resources. According to the WaterAid Website, 783 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. That translates to about 11% of the world’s population. Around 700,000 children die every year from diarrhea caused by unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation. The name “1000 shillings” is based on how much an average woman in the Ugandan Namatala slum lives on per day. 1000 shillings would be .40 cents. Can you imagine trying to feed your entire family for 40 cents a day? My heart breaks for these people. And in so many ways it’s easy to feel helpless to do anything.
