Water is a luxury that I know I have taken for granted . Whether in our kitchen faucet, refrigerator, bathroom faucet, the shower, a hose outside…clean and drinkable water is always easily accessible and available for my family and I. However, there are millions of children around the world who are suffering because they don’t have access to safe water and sanitation. I saw it first hand during my mission trip to Haiti last year. Unfortunately, without clean water the health and education of these children are negatively impacted. Not to mention that they are forced to grow up way to fast and miss out on enjoying their childhood. HIV/AIDS is a disease that forever changed our family when it took the life of my uncle Carlos almost 20 years ago. It saddens me that so many families are affected by HIV/AIDS…even more so when babies are being born HIV-positive despite it being preventable. Each and every day, 900 children are infected with HIV – 90% of child infections of HIV are passed on from mother to child and 100% of those infections could have been prevented with proper care and treatment for the HIV-positive mother.
As a mother of a daughter, I feel that she can do anything she puts her mind too with a good education…every girl deserves that same opportunity. Unfortunately, there are children around the world, especially little girls, who aren’t given that chance. Based on the stats listed on Educationenvoy.org, there are 34 Million adolescent girls not in school and 61 Million children, both boys and girls, who are shut out of primary school.

So you may be asking “What is the International Day of the Girl”? (I know I did) According to the United Nations, it is a day to “help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”  It’s a day for us to unite and celebrate the importance of girls all over the world in the hopes of advancing their rights in developing countries. Today there are events taking place all over the world to celebrate the first-ever International Day of the Girl…how amazing is that??!!

Not only does social media give a voice to myself and to those in need throughout the world but it amplifies it in such a way that we are moved to do something about it. It’s amazing because it is such an easy yet effective way to both educate and empower others to get involved and make a difference in the lives of others.
