#GivingTuesday is a call to action to celebrate giving and encourage more, better and smarter giving during the Holiday Season. It’s an organizing principle to encourage the creativity and energy of Americans to work together for good. (via November 27, 2012 - Giving Tuesday | The Steady Hand)
Giving Tuesday is a new campaign campaign for November to remind us all that the collective energy and creativity toward helping others through the greater good. Today, November 27, is the launch of a movement of charities, families, businesses and individuals with the hope that “Giving Tuesday” will have equal power in our minds as “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” do now.
#GivingTuesday is a day to prove that giving back to our communities is part of a great tradition of philanthropy and volunteerism that helps make a nation strong. #GivingTuesday campaign provides a framework for us to contribute to our community and help make this season the biggest giving season yet. This is an inspiration for us to take collaborative action to improve our local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes we support and help create a better world. Our goal is for #GivingTuesday to become a major part of the holiday season, putting giving at the forefront in November rather than an afterthought in December or the New Year.
As someone who has worked in non-profit organizations, the end of the year is a hard time. Many people don’t make donations due to the other holiday spending that is happening. Sadly, this is the time of year when those funds are needed more than ever. Giving Tuesday isn’t just about logging into a website and dropping in some change, it’s a movement to spur giving of time and talent during this time of year.
At a time of Thanksgiving in the United States and at the beginning of a holiday season in many parts of the world, filled with goodwill and good cheer, it is time we stopped and took a long look into our children’s eyes and the eyes of our parents so that we remember what is important in our lives. Our planet is reeling and in pain, hatred is fueling war and bloodshed around the globe. It’s time to make a real and renewed commitment to work TOGETHER to build a better world.
The season of giving kicked into full gear on Friday. Perhaps you were one of thousands waiting for the stores to open their doors at 1:00 a.m. Or maybe you hunted for sales yesterday, with Cyber Sales Monday. But did you know that today is a special day as well.
Along with scrumptious turkey meals, last week also brought us Grey Thursday, Black Friday, and Small Business Saturday. Yesterday was Cyber Monday. Today launches a different kind of “shopping day.” It’s called Giving Tuesday and it’s a day that retailers, charities, online organizations, community centers, individuals, families and others come together to promote GIVING. This day is a call to action with the goal is to help #GivingTuesday become a major part of the holiday season, putting giving upfront in November rather than an afterthought in December or the New Year. As Martin Luther King Jr said, “Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” This is the spirit behind Giving Tuesday. I hope you’ll get involved.
Next Tuesday, November 27, 2012, #GivingTuesday takes it place on the calendar. This campaign will provide Americans with a framework to contribute to their community, and help all to give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes that help create a better world
#GivingTuesday is the collective power of charities, families, businesses and individuals that will transform how people think, talk and participate in the giving season, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are synonymous with holiday shopping. Today, November 27, 2012, giving will be its opening day.
Today’s the day!! I’ve now seen it called Giving Tuesday, Generous Tuesday, and Fair Tuesday, but there is one unifying message: let’s make a difference! Either by charitable donations, like tying Pure Charity into your online shopping. (Imagine the difference that could have/should have been made yesterday with all of that online shopping!!) Or the message of Fair Tuesday which is to just buy one fair trade item. Did you know that if we, as consumers here in America, made just one fair trade purchase, it would lift ONE MILLION (let me write that out this way because it looks more impressive: 1,000,000) families out of poverty for one whole year. Does that boggle your mind? It does mine! There is power in that! And it helps to take away some of the overwhelming-ness of big issues like poverty, modern day slavery, and people living with HIV/AIDS or those who are abused, since fair trade typically protects those very people.
