A year after that trip to Guatemala, my life has changed immensely. I have gone from a person who simply read the tragic stories about women around the world, to someone who is trying my absolute hardest to advocate for them and make change. My eyes have been opened to the struggles and challenges that so many women face daily around the world. The inequality, abuse, rape, honor killing, workload, lack of education, lack of access to health care and degrading status of girls and women in society, is utterly heartbreaking. I no longer can be that American women standing still and doing nothing. I’ve decided that I’ve got to act. It is a life-long journey that may not change the world. However, if I can help just help one girl or woman live a life of dignity and respect than it will be worth it. (via Being Half the Sky | Thirdeyemom)

One of my favorite organizations to work with is Save the Children. Save the Children is one of the leading organizations of helping children worldwide. Nearly no place in the world is untouched by human trafficking. Furthermore human trafficking can occur within and outside of international borders occurring in a variety of industries ranging from sex trade, to forced child labor and child soldiers. Oftentimes the victims are kidnapped against their will or inadvertently taken from their families who believe their children are going away to get an eduction where in reality they are being sold into a life of servitude and slavery inside a brothel. The REAL Awards will be a way to honor, respect and appreciate the amazing difference that Frontline Health Care workers are achieving both in the United States and around the World. Some of the fabulous Frontline Health Care Workers in developing nations have already been honored. Fortunately NGO’s such as World Food Programme (WFP) is there to help. The WFP has worked alongside the UNHCR (The United Nation’s Refugee Arm) to provide a regular supply of food to the families. While UNHCR is distributing such necessary supplies as blankets for fuel and cooking, the WFP has been supplying “dry rations” over the winter months that refugees can cook themselves. The Dry rations include rice, bulgur, wheat, yellow split peas, sugar and salt, which are provided along with a daily allotment of bread. (via The Crisis in Syria and how you can help | Thirdeyemom)

The figures are startling. Every year around the world 287,000 women die in what should be the most joyous time of life: Having a baby. What I like so much about 1000 Shillings is that not only does it empower women to earn a living and support their family, but it also gives them a voice. 1000 Shillings aims invites each woman artisian to tell the story behind her life and how 1000 Shillings has impacted her and her family.
